ASOPROAAA (Asociación de Productores Agropecuarios de Acosta y Aserrí) is a cooperative founded in 1998 in the wake of Hurricane Mitch. Based in the cantons of Acosta and Aserrí in Costa Rica’s Central Valley, it unites around 1,200 smallholder coffee producers committed to improving their livelihoods through better market access, training, and community development programs.
The cooperative’s member farms are typically family-owned and situated at high elevations in areas characterized by fertile volcanic soils and ideal microclimates for specialty coffee cultivation. ASOPROAAA supports its producers with technical guidance, micro-credit programs, and centralized processing facilities.
Coffees from ASOPROAAA are processed in a variety of styles—most notably black honey and natural. Coffee here is grown at elevations between 1400 to 1900 meters above sea level. The dry season, which runs from December to April, provides the perfect window for natural processing. Cherries are carefully selected, dried under the sun on raised beds or patios, and regularly turned to ensure uniform drying.
These careful methods bring out vivid fruit notes, bright acidity, and a syrupy body, making ASOPROAAA’s coffees consistently stand out on the cupping table.
